The scale of the underground workings of the former pit in my village was something I knew very little about until recently. It is a vast, complex and many layered subterranean city. Thousands of miles of roads and passageways, caverns, workshops, pony stables and railway lines. The vastness underground makes the size of the overground workings seem almost small in comparison.
