In the distance are vague images of docks and the sea. The best steam coal was used for Atlantic cruising by the wealthy, courtesy of Cunard and other liner owners. Below the ground the colours evoke coal, blood, fire and heat, truly terrible, cramped conditions on an unimaginable scale. Incidentally life in the bowels of the ships was similarly horrific.
